Board on Best Practices

Starts: 01-01-2024
Ends: 01-15-2027
Location: Online Opportunity

Description:

AMS is seeking volunteers at all stages of their academic or professional careers in any sector of the weather and climate enterprise to serve on the Board on Best Practices (“BBP”).

Created in 2014, this board serves to develop best practices related to issues, products, services, needs, or concerns of interest to the Society and the sciences and constituencies it represents. AMS Best Practice statements are created and maintained with oversight by and the active participation of the AMS Council, the representative and elected governing body of the organization, and as such, speak with the full weight of the Society. The Board shall consist of up to twelve members, including the chair, with representation drawn from all sectors of the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise. Each Board member serves a term of three years, potentially renewable once, and staggered as necessary.

A Best Practice may be initiated by the AMS Board on Best Practices, the AMS Council, or any other AMS body. If initiated by the Board on Best Practices, a Best Practice drafting committee shall be formed in consultation with the Commissioner of Professional Affairs and the AMS council, and include:
  • a committee chair
  • at least one member of the Board of Best Practices who may serve as chair
  • at least one AMS Council member as liaison
  • at least one member of another AMS board or committee
  • an appropriate number of experts in the subject area: at least one half of the committee must be AMS members

Each Best Practice will be reviewed by the Board at least every five years for its relevance and continued applicability. The Board may choose to retain the Best Practice as is or to withdraw it. If the Board determines the Best Practice should be revised, the Board may appoint a drafting committee to develop a revised Best Practice for consideration and approval by Council.
Our work requires tremendous coordination, commitment, and collaboration between tens of thousands of people, all of whom are dedicated to success. AMS has created a structure of volunteer support for this coordination and collaboration that includes six commissions overseeing 140+ boards and committees.

The information provided in this application will be provided to the various commissioners as they begin making appointments for the committees and boards of their commission. Please note that most appointments are made in the fall for terms that begin in January, so you may not hear anything for some time after submitting this form. Also note that great effort is put into maintaining balance on committees and boards in terms of sector, discipline, etc., so you may not be used on a specific committee or board immediately.
The board holds monthly Zoom meetings, typically 30 minutes long and may meet in-person at the Annual Meeting.
